NorwichDr Coghlan studied medicine at University College Dublin and qualified in 2006. She completed her basic specialist training in psychiatry in Dublin and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2010. She was awarded the Standish Barry Prize on the basis of the results she obtained in the Royal College of Psychiatrists membership examinations.
She accepted a clinical research post at the Institute of Psychiatry in London in 2010. This post involved working on research in the area of neurodevelopmental disorders and clinical work at an autism assessment clinic at the Maudsley Hospital. She moved to a clinical post in forensic psychiatry at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust in 2011. In 2012, she commenced dual specialist training in Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry in Oxford.
In 2018, Dr Coghlan was involved in establishing the East of England Community Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. She was the Clinical Lead of this service between 2018 and 2024, before moving into independent practice.
Dr Coghlan is a compassionate doctor who provides high quality, patient-centred care. She undertakes detailed and personalised assessments of children who present with mental health difficulties. She is experienced at dealing with high levels of complexity. Her experience gives her a broad base from which to assess and treat young people’s mental health problems. Dr Coghlan considers the child’s strengths as well as any difficulties they are experiencing and works collaboratively with the child and their family to consider the most appropriate plan. She encourages the involvement of any relevant agencies or professionals involved in a child’s care.
Dr Coghlan is skilled and experienced at providing psychoeducation and training to professionals from several agencies who work with children, including education professionals. In her spare time, she loves to spend time with her family and friends. She has a keen interest in theatre and the arts.
