Understanding Autism and PDA

A workshop for GPs and other Health Care Professionals

Overview

This one day workshop, aimed at GPs and other Health Care Professionals, provides an introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Moving away from traditional stereotypes of Autism, the course explores the variety of ways in which Autism can present in both children and adults.  We also examine how Autism differs from other psychiatric definitions such as Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Attachment Disorder and Conduct Disorder. Of particular relevance, we discuss the concept of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). The course also looks at how females present differently to males, and explores the difference between Autism and Personality Disorder. Eating disorders are also discussed. A number of other conditions such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD/ADD co-exist with Autism. We examine how these conditions impact upon young people, their behaviour and their families. Finally we consider the mental health implications of not addressing the possibility of an individual having autism, and discuss the most effective way of supporting both them and their families.
