Help for Psychology

Kate Ogden - Speech and Language Therapist

I qualified as a Speech and Language therapist in 2001 at the Manchester Metropolitan University, and have enjoyed a very diverse and interesting career in the NHS for 15 years. My pursuit to develop my clinical skills has taken me to Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, and eventually back to Norfolk. During that time I have specialised in working with children with Specific Language Impairment, and Complex Special Educational Needs. I have worked within a broad range of Paediatric settings including Community Clinics, Children’s Centres, Language Units, Mainstream and Special Schools and Designated Specialist Provisions for Autism Spectrum Conditions. The latter have given me extensive experience and appreciation for working with children with Autism Spectrum Conditions, Communication Disorders and Complex Needs.

Since moving back to Norfolk I have worked in a Special School for children with Complex Special Educational Needs, including Autism Spectrum Conditions.  More recently I worked for two years with the ‘Talk About’  team which provided training and support for people working with young children with Speech, language and communication needs. The project received a national award in recognition of its innovative approach.

My route to qualifying as a Speech and Language Therapist was via a four year joint honours degree in Psychology and Speech Pathology. This degree is the only one of its kind in the UK. From a young age I knew that I wanted to work with people, and with my interest in Psychology and Communication this seemed like a natural choice. I am very fortunate to be a part of the Help for Psychology Team as it enables me to implement so many of my specialist skills and interests, whilst working alongside the innovative and inspiring professionals whose passionate interest in ASD has been infectious. I have always enjoyed working as part of a team and seeing how effectively speech and language therapy works alongside other professions.
